ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals of all ages, characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Those with ADHD may struggle to maintain focus on tasks, easily becoming distracted by irrelevant stimuli, and frequently making careless mistakes. Hyperactivity may present in many was such as excessive restlessness, fidgeting, and difficulty remaining seated when expected, inner feelings of discontent. Impulsivity often manifests as acting without considering consequences, such as blurting out answers or interrupting conversations. These symptoms can significantly impact academic, occupational, and social functioning, often starting in childhood and continuing into adulthood.

Three main presentations of ADHD

There are three main presentations of ADHD: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined type. The predominantly inattentive type is often overlooked, particularly in women and young girls, and may be characterized by primarily struggling with inattention symptoms, while the predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type features more hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms. The combined type, the most common presentation, involves a combination of both sets of symptoms.

Diagnosis involves a comprehensive evaluation by our board-certified psychiatric specialists, considering the presence and severity of symptoms, their impact on daily life, and ruling out other potential causes. Additionally, we provide FDA approved testing to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. Treatment often includes a combination of behavioral therapy, lifestyle adjustments, and medication to help manage symptoms and improve functioning.
